Dallas Art Fair Pulls Galleries from Near and Far

The 5th edition of the Dallas Art Fair, held at an event space in the city's arts district, is not as regional as its name suggests. Of this year's 83 exhibitors--five more than in 2012--only 12 are from Texas (Dallas, Ft. Worth and Houston). Thirty-one New York dealers signed up this year, from Benrimon Contemporary to ZieherSmith, along with others from locales as remote as Tokyo (Misako & Rosen) and Seoul (GAMO Gallery). And, most tellingly, 44 of the exhibitors are participating in the fair for the first time.

Please join us as we celebrate the opening of Christopher Mir’s first solo exhibition at the gallery this Thursday from 6 to 8pm. The exhibition titled, Static Is Singing, features all new works by the artist.
This exhibition will be on view at the gallery from January 17th through February 23rd, 2013. Mir draws on imagery culled from social media, the internet, film stills and other sources to create a series of non-sequiturs that appear to be out of a strange graphic novel.
The most recent works are an exciting new departure from many of Mir’s earlier paintings and is sure to be an exciting show!

Shortlisted for the Sobey Art Award in 2004, Cal Lane marries fine art and welding in her ornate sculptures utilizing reclaimed steel. Working with objects including spades, wheelbarrows, oil drums and car doors, Lane raises these industrial materials to the status of fine art. For the 18th Biennale of Sydney, Lane will create a new work on Cockatoo Island involving a stenciled carpet of red sand and a steel-cutting performance into a shipping container. The Biennale will bring Lane’s work to Australian audiences for the first time.

The New York Foundation for the Arts/Artspire will be fiscally sponsoring Ben Weiner's upcoming November 2012 solo show at Benrimon Contemporary and his accompanying series of lectures.
NYFA is helping him take his fundraising to new levels as he prepares for this project, with some exciting developments are already in the works:
Materials for the Arts has agreed to donate studio supplies and materials for this project.
And, starting in June, he will be working with Rockethub on an online fundraising campaign to raise money for a video installation that he will exhibit as part of this show.

The Janet and Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize, which awards $25,000 to an up-and-coming visual artist or visual-artist collaborators living and working in the Greater Baltimore area, has announced its semifinalists. The list of more 40 semifinalists will be whittled down to about six finalists who will have their work displayed in the Alvin and Fanny Blaustein Thalheimer Galleries of the Baltimore Museum of Art June 16 through July 29.
Jurors for this year’s seventh annual competition include curator Carlos Basualdo, gallery director Jane Hait, and artist Shinique Smith. A reception will follow the highly anticipated announcement of the prize winner on July 14 at the BMA. A few days after that, on July 20, a complete exhibition of the remaining semifinalists’ work will go on display in the Decker and Meyerhoff galleries of MICA through Aug. 5.
